WHAT IS THE NC-AATF?

The American Association of Teachers of French, founded in 1927, is the largest national association of French teachers in the world with nearly 10,000 members in 75 local associations. With its 223 current members, the NC-AATF is the 14th-largest chapter in the United States.

The AATF represents the interests of French teachers at all levels, from K-12 to post-secondary education. The association’s website at http://www.frenchteachers.org offers a wealth of practical information, resources, and opportunities for all French teachers.

Several times a year the AATF publishes a National Bulletin with up-dated information on all of the association’s activities and initiatives and on opportunities for members such as scholarships for study in a Francophone country. It also publishes each year six issues of The French Review, which has the largest circulation of any scholarly journal of French studies in the world. It is a treasure trove of articles and reviews on French and francophone literature, cinema, society and culture, linguistics, technology, and pedagogy.

The NC-AATF is the primary professional association of the French teachers of North Carolina. We organize pedagogical, cultural, or literary presentations at the annual meeting of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina. We also invite our members to participate each spring in a joint meeting with our Spanish colleagues in the North Carolina chapter of the AATSP and our foreign language-teaching colleagues in the community colleges (FLICC). The NC-AATF holds business meetings for its members at both of the above meetings.

The NC-AATF publishes, twice yearly, a Bulletin which helps keep members abreast of current events and opportunities of interest to the French teachers of North Carolina. The chapter sponsors a Concours pédagogique each year to encourage innovative teachers to share their classroom successes with their colleagues. We also present a North Carolina French Teacher of the Year award to state colleagues whose accomplishments deserve the highest recognition. We provide modest financial support (matching funds) to teaching colleagues planning French projects, which are supported by the AATF national organization.

If you are not currently a member of your North Carolina chapter of AATF, we urge you to join us in our common effort to enhance the professional life of French teachers in our State. New member application forms are easily available on the AATF website, and the annual fee is minimal. Absolutely the best deal around for all you receive in return!
